Ben & Jerrys : Packaging

Being a frozen product does give us challenges on packaging. While we’ve stripped our tub down to be as friendly as we can make it (it’s made from 90% renewable paper stock), the sad truth is that to stop it leaking, we have to coat it with polyethylene which renders it difficult to recycle in the normal fashion.

The good news is that our packaging is something we are continually working on to make improvements such as the tamper proof band which is polyester –a great step away from PVCs and we use water based inks for printing the tubs.

In our scoop shops, we’ve switched to 100% corn starch based cold drink cups where possible which are fully compostable in commercial or industrial facilities.
