1985 - Super Mario launched in North America (2nd highest video game sales ever)
1989 - Design and release of the Nintendo Game Boy
1989 - NES was superseded by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) 16-bit 4th generation console moving on from the NES 8-bit third generation
1990- Main rival Sega Megadrive, ultimately the SNES won in popularity and sales
Ultimately the SNES sold 49 million copies, 20 million more than the Megadrive
1995 - Release of the 'Virtual Boy' table mounted semi portable console (failure)
1996 - Release of the Nintendo 64 featuring 3-D Graphics and multiplayer capabilities, system controller introduced analogue stick
2001 - Introduction of the Nintendo GameCube first console with optical disk storage instead of cartridges
