Chuck Palanhiuk

After aimless posting and searching for what is good I have decided that my first concrete subject to research on what is good? Is the author, novelist & journalist Chuck Palanhiuk.

Subject 1: Chuck.

Bio:

ChuckPalahniuk was born in Pasco, Washington. He is the son of Carol and Fred Palahniuk, and grew up living in a mobile home in nearby Burbank, Washington with his family. His parents later separated and divorced, often leaving him and his three siblings to live with their grandparents at their cattle ranch in Eastern Washington.

In his twenties, Palahniuk attended the University of Oregon's School of Journalism, graduating in 1986. While attending college he worked as an intern for National Public Radio member station KLCC in Eugene, Oregon. He moved to Portland soon afterwards. After writing for the local newspaper for a short while, he began working for Freightliner as a diesel mechanic, continuing in that job until his writing career took off. During that time, he also wrote manuals on fixing trucks and had a stint as a journalist. After casually attending a free, introductory seminar held by an organization called Landmark Education, Palahniuk quit his job as a journalist in 1988. Palahniuk did volunteer work for a homeless shelter; later, he also volunteered at a hospice as an escort; he provided transportation for terminally ill people and brought them to support group meetings. He ceased volunteering upon the death of a patient to whom he had grown attached.
Palahniuk would also become a member of the rebellious Cacophony Society in his adulthood. He is a regular participant in their events, including the annual Santa Rampage in Portland. His participation in the Society inspired some of the events in his writings, both fictional and non-fictional. Most notably, he used the Cacophony Society as the basis for Project Mayhem in Fight Club.

Interview with Chuck Palhniuk in the Guardian newspaper (2004)

Summary and quotes from interview:

- ' Chuck Palahniuk is best known for his cult novel Fight Club, but his new short story, Guts, is even more extreme - not violent so much as visceral. It is also an extraordinary piece of work. Dan Glaister introduces the author, whom he met in Las Vegas.'

- all the expected Palahniuk ingredients - anatomical detail, suburban melodrama, violence and humour. It is in some sense more shocking than Fight Club, his 1996 novel (later a film) about a secret fraternity of young men who pummel each other half to death in illicit contests, and who gradually evolve into a terrorist unit.

Proving that Chuck is good:

Secondary Research: Peoples opinions of Chuck Palanhiuk & his work

' As most folks who have read some Palnhiuk, I was introduced to the authors work via the cinematic adaptation of Fight Club. As soon as I saw the 1999 film by David Fincher, I became a bit obsessed with it. After a single viewing I went out and bought the deluxe dvd version. Fight Club tops the short list of myriad films in my collection taht I've taken time to view with audio commentary. Moreover I watched the film with every different commentary that the DVD had to offer and more than once. That cant be said for any other film I've ever bothered to rent or buy.

In Chucks work he enjoys slipping in facts that aren't known commonplace and are very interesting conversation starters. Such as

- The best way to get blood out of you're bedding is by using aspirin
- The dots in the corners of movies are called cigarette buts
- Collagen is made out of rendered cow fat
- Pool filters generate enough pressure to suck your intestines from your rectum
- Car companies only recall dangerous vehicles if its cheaper than paying off the victim
- Submucosal Hemotoma - Screaming so hard you scream blood

Interview with Chuck Palanhiuk. This interview, in my personal opinion shows you why he is such a genius author.
