1889 -  Company founded

1956 - Hiroshi Yamauchi visited US to explore playing card business

1963 - Rename from 'Nintendo Playing Card Company' to 'Nintendo Company'

1966 - Nintendo moved into the toy industry

1966 - Introduction of 'Ultra Hand'

1973 - Nintendo moved into family entertainment with 'Laser Clay Shooting System'

1974 - Secured rights to Magnavox Odyssey video games console

1975 - Moved into video game industry with EVR Race designed by game designer Genyo Takeda

1977 - Began producing home color tv game

1977 - Student product developer Shigeri Myamoto began designing Nintendos casing

1980 - Release of handheld video game 'Game & Watch' 

1981 - Release of Donkey Kong designed by Myamoto

1983 - Release of first family computer (famicom) known outside japan as Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

1985 - NES launched in North America

1985 - Super Mario launched in North America (2nd highest video game sales ever)

1989 - Design and release of the Nintendo Game Boy

1989 - NES was superseded by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) 16-bit 4th generation console moving on from the NES 8-bit third generation

1990- Main rival Sega Megadrive, ultimately the SNES won in popularity and sales

Ultimately the SNES sold 49 million copies, 20 million more than the Megadrive

1995 - Release of the 'Virtual Boy' table mounted semi portable console (failure)

1996 - Release of the Nintendo 64 featuring 3-D Graphics and multiplayer capabilities, system controller introduced analogue stick

2001 - Introduction of the Nintendo GameCube first console with optical disk storage instead of cartridges 

2004 - Nintendo DS replaced manufacturing of GameBoy

2008 - Introduction of Nintendo Wii

2009 - Introduction of Nintendo Dsi XL

2011 - Planned introduction of Nintendo 3DS

2008- Introduction of Nintendo Dsi
